He caught me up against him. His hold was just as strong as before, but it was gentle, restrained and honest.

Nicholas.

“I missed you,” he said hoarsely.

I wrapped my arms around him, not nearly as gentle. He dipped his head, slanting his mouth over mine. The kiss didn’t meander or hesitate, it went straight to fire. I was a drought-dry field and Nicholas was the spark. Our tongues touched and I felt it all the way down my thighs and into my toes. He backed me up against the wall, one hand on my waist, the other flattened on the stones by my cheek.

He is back! Thank the reader deities everywhere!  Oh Nicholas~ if only you were real!  I was both happy and sad that this was the last book in the Drake Chronicles.

Review: Wicked Kiss (Nightwatchers #2)

Author: Michelle Rowen
Format: eARC
Print Length: 440
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Published: Feb. 26,2013

I used to be ordinary Samantha Day, but that's changed. Now, after one dark kiss from a dangerous boy, I can steal someone's soul...or their life. If I give in to the constant hunger inside me, I hurt anyone I kiss. If I don't...I hurt myself.

Bishop is the one whose kiss I crave most, but if I kiss him, I'll kill him. Then there's another boy, one I can't hurt. One whose kiss seems to miraculously quell my hunger. They're both part of a team of angels and demons that's joined forces in my city to fight a mysterious rising darkness, an evil that threatens everyone I know and love. I just wonder if I'll be able to help Bishop-or if I'm just another part of the darkness he's sworn to destroy....

NIGHTWATCHERS

When angels and demons must work together, something beyond evil is rising...

My Thoughts

Being a nexus and a Gray is getting to be rather hard on Sam. A Gray means you can’t kiss anyone without taking their soul. To make matters worse- she has a strong desire/drive to kiss anyone and everyone. Whoever made the Grays knew what they were doing. The maker must have been all kinds of evil, or just desperate.

Bishop is the angel tasked with solving the Gray problem. Since heaven sent him to work on the problem, hell gets to send their own guy, Kraven. Now there is a whole team of demons/angels trying to solve the Gray issue when another problem pops up and with it another angel, Cassandra.

Sam is an interesting heroine- she is suppose to be evil now that she is a Gray. She is suppose to be collecting souls but for some reason when she was turned into a Gray she kept her soul. This made her know right from wrong- she does not want to take a soul. She is fighting the kissing urge with everything she has.

Bishop, the angel Sam is in love with, is keeping secrets from her. It’s hard to be around her as well so he is trying to keep his distance. To make matters worse- the only person she can kiss without stealing a soul is Kraven- Bishops real biological brother.

Wicked Kiss was a nice follow up to Dark Kiss. There were a few places that I felt the pacing was a little slow. But that could have just been me being impatient for the secrets to get revealed. I had a major issue with the love story- but again this could be the practical side of me getting in the way. I totally understand falling in love with Bishop I do, but if the only person I could kiss was Kraven. I would probably have tried to be with him, especially after what gets revealed in this book. There are old faces from the previous book in this one. The revelations at the end of the book definitely will make you want to continue the series. The ending was well wow is all I can say. This reader cannot wait for the third book!

My Rating 4 stars out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote “Because,” I whispered, “some things are worth dying for.”

Other Characters

Bishop- angel boy, with a soul
Kraven- demon boy
Cassandra- angel girl
Roth-demon boy

Review: Indigo Awakening (The Hunted #1)

Author: Jordan Dane
Format: eARC
Print Length: 304
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Published: Dec. 18, 2012

Because of what you are, the Believers will hunt you down.

Voices told Lucas Darby to run. Voices no one else can hear. He’s warned his sister not to look for him, but Rayne refuses to let her troubled brother vanish on the streets of LA. In her desperate search, she meets Gabriel Stewart, a runaway with mysterious powers and far too many secrets. Rayne can’t explain her crazy need to trust the strange yet compelling boy—to touch him—to protect him even though he scares her.

A fanatical church secretly hunts psychic kids—gifted “Indigo” teens feared to be the next evolution of mankind—for reasons only “the Believers” know. Now Rayne’s only hope is Gabe, who is haunted by an awakening power—a force darker than either of them imagine—that could doom them all.

My Thoughts

When Ryane gets a call from her little brother Lucas, she gets worried. To be perfectly honest, Lucas should not be calling her- you see he is supposed to be locked up in a mental hospital the one that her older sister Mia put him in. Lucas tells her that he is okay but not to look for him, Ryane ignores that part.

Ryane is not the only one looking for him- so his Mia and the church that she works for. They are not worried about him though- they want him because he is suspected of being a “Crystal Child”. That makes him a more advance Indigo child- humans with special abilities.

On Ryane’s hunt she meets Gabriel- who is like Lucas in some ways. Gabriel agrees to help Ryane find Lucas. Finding Lucas is hard though because he has a voice in his head that only he can here telling him where to go. The voice belongs to another Indigo child, Kendra.

There is not a main character in this book as it is written by several different points of view. Almost every character in the book gets its own chapter or two. Okay, so that is an exaggeration but it is how it felt. It also caused the book to be confusing at times. This I think kept me from getting emotionally involved with the characters. With no main character I honestly did not know who’s side I should be on. My favorite character was on the evil side- Dr. Fiona. She put the e in evil.

There were several characters that when reading their point of view it was well pointless- such as Kendra. She was the least liked character for me. To be honest she annoyed the ever-loving heck out of me. There has to be more to Mia but we never got to see her good side- she has to have one. I felt bad for Lucas- being drugged for so many years and then hunted. I had a hard time believing Gabe and Ryane were hooking up.

My Rating 2 out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote "At the risk of sounding like I'm stalking you, you want extra celery?"

Mia- Evil Big Sister
Ryane- great big (middle) sister

Review: Impossible

Author: Komal Lewis
Format: ebook
Print Length: 254
Publisher: Self-published
Published: October 24, 2012

Ashton Summers is on her way to becoming the most popular girl in school and nothing—or no one—is going to stand in her way. Especially not Luca Byron, her freak neighbor, with his tattoos, loud music, and distracting green eyes.

Luca Byron has three goals in life: get through high school with a low profile, make sure his garage band becomes something more than a hobby, and try to forget about his insufferable ex-best friend, Ashton, who he can’t get out of his mind.

The last thing Ashton and Luca want to do is rekindle their friendship, but when Ashton takes a tumble down the social ladder, Luca—with his new makeover—is the only one who can help her rise up again by pretending to be her boyfriend. At first, being together is unbearable and annoying, but things start to change as Ashton and Luca discover the real reasons they drifted apart seven years ago.

Now, keeping their hands off each other seems impossible.

My Thoughts

Luca use to be Ashton’s best friend until a tragedy happened in the fifth grade. Since then he and Ashton had not spoken too much. It hurt them both when they stopped talking and they turned to other people- Luca some people on the outskirts of the cliques and Ashton to a girl named Kance. Ashton and Kance make a pack to become the most popular girls in school- and they will do anything to keep that pack.

Ashton has it all- the guys at school want to date her and the girls at school want to be her. But she is not happy. She lets her best friend Kance talk her into doing something mean- not too mean, just mean enough. Yeah, I forgot to mention she is a one of those “mean girls.” This cost her a lot- some of her so-called friends and the captainship of the cheerleading quad. Luca is her only chance to fix the miss that she got herself into- but will he do it?

Ashton is a brat- a real brat. You know those girls in school that you look at and think seriously? That is Ashton. How can she have it all and still not be happy? Why does she have to be nasty mean in the process as well? I mean literally completely nasty. Luca is the guy next door- the one that dresses how he wants, likes who he likes, and well is just a good guy. He is also the only one that will tell Ashton the truth about the stuff that she does in the name of popularity.

Why then do I like a book about a mean nasty girl who is falling for an awesome guy?  A guy that is social suicide once others figure it out? I like that Luca calls her out on her antics. I like that Luca’s friends although wary of Ashton try to accept her. I like that Luca can see right through Kance. Who by the way is the world’s worse bestie ever! I like that Ashton knows when she does wrong, feels bad for it but does it anyway in the name of popularity. It shows a side of popular that most people never see- the side that hurts.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote “It’s impossible for me to stay away from you. It’s impossible for me to be without you.”

Other Characters

Oliver- dumb quarterback, why would anyone want to date him
Kance- Ashton’s best friend, if I were Ashton I would get a protective vest for my back
Riley/Eddie- members of Luca’s band, both pretty cool guys.

The tension in my mouth eased and I finally regained control of my senses. I pushed her back and crushed my lips against hers. A moan escaped Ash’s mouth as I pressed against her harder. Those sweet lips of hers were hungrily tearing against mine like she might die if she didn’t have me. Her kisses were driving me insane.

My name is Beatrice. When I was born, I was blessed with the Sight. I was immediately removed from my parents and enrolled in the Institution. At the age of twelve, I had my first true vision, earning my raven’s wings. And when I turned seventeen, one of my visions came true. Things haven’t been the same since.

The Institution depends on me to keep the City safe from our enemy, the Dreamcatchers, but I’m finding it harder to do while keeping a secret from everyone, including my best friend Gabe. It is a secret that could put us all in danger. A secret that could kill me and everyone close to me.

Review: Luminosity

Author: Stephanie Thomas
Format: eARC
Print Length: 296
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Published: Nov. 13, 2012

But the enemy has been coming to me in my dreams, and I think I’m falling in love with him. He says they’re coming. He says they’re angry. And I think I’ve already helped them win.

My Thoughts

Luminosity is a book that shines bright in a sea of paranormal books of vampire, werewolves, witches, fae and shape-shifters. Seers and Dreamcatchers in a dystopia society was a refreshing change of pace.

Beatrice (Bea) was the best seer at the Institution. Some even thinks that she’s a better seer than the keeper. Bea grew up at the Institution- where all violet-eyed babies are brought. Violet-eyes meant you had the gift of sight- you saw the future. Which protects the rest of her society from the Dreamcatchers- one touch from one of them and you are dead.

Bea starts having visions she does not understand. She visits the Widow- a former seer who was dismissed from the Institute because of Dreamcatcher- one who visited her in her dreams. The Widow warns Beatrice- of the Keeper and of her dreams.

Back at the Institute things get worse. Bea trying to protect her best friend, Gabriel begins keeping secrets from him. Secrets that could get them both locked away. You see, a Dreamcatcher can talk to her in her dreams. His name is Echo. He says that they have to save ourselves from each other. He must save her, and she must save him.

Bea is a unique main character- strong, independent and a protector. She does not hide behind a sassy or snarky attitude but instead is just refreshingly polite. She will do what it takes to protect those she loves. She follows the rules of the institute but knows something is off and decides to get to the bottom of it.

There was no real love interest in the book- Bea has feelings for Gabriel that went a little beyond best friends. Gabriel had feelings for Bea that went a little beyond best friends but they did not act upon those feelings too much. Bea only met Echo at the end of the book so there was no “real” romance there- although the beginnings of feelings do start. Both relationships were sweet but underdeveloped in the loved department. This suited me just fine- there is a lot going on in the book I would not want a love triangle to get in the way.

I enjoyed Luminosity, it was a book that I read in one seating. The world that Bea lived in was remarkable - and kinda naïve. The citizens allowed the Keeper and other Seers to be their source of protection. Yet there were those that questioned, and rebelled against the Keepers’ directives. Others still blindly followed the Keeper- even if it went against their morals. The ending will probably not surprise you but it may just shock you with the timing of Bea’s actions and the things that are revealed.

My Rating 5 stars out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote “Beware what you cannot see. Trust what you cannot trust.”

Review: Touch of Death

Author: Kelly Hashway
Format: ebook
Print Length: 235 pages
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Published: Jan. 15, 2013 (ebook published Dec. 23, 2012)

Jodi Marshall isn’t sure how she went from normal teenager to walking disaster. One minute she’s in her junior year of high school, spending time with her amazing boyfriend and her best friend. The next she’s being stalked by some guy no one seems to know.

After the stranger, Alex, reveals himself, Jodi learns he’s not a normal teenager and neither is she. With a kiss that kills and a touch that brings the dead back to life, Jodi discovers she’s part of a branch of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac, Ophiuchus. A branch of necromancers that are descendents of Medusa. A branch of necromancers with poisoned blood writhing in their veins.

Jodi’s deadly to the living and even more deadly to the deceased. She has to leave her old, normal life behind before she hurts the people she loves. As if that isn’t difficult enough, Jodi discovers she’s the chosen one who has to save the rest of her kind from perishing at the hands of Hades. If she can’t figure out how to control her power, history will repeat itself, and her race will become extinct.

My Thoughts

I love books that follow the current trends- angels, demons, shape-shifters, vampires, werewolves, witches and zombies. So when I saw a book about zombies was released, I was there waiting in line.

The zombies are created by necromancers named Ophi, who have to be born between Nov. 29 and December 17. Sidebar- Thank goodness I missed that start date by ten days. Their blood has the power to give life or take it away. The zombies obey the commands of the Ophi that raised them from the dead. Ophi’s are not totally human- they have Gorgon blood. This was a cool twist to the necromancer stories.

Jodi got a little bit on my nerves. I understand that she was homeschooled but seriously how unperceptive can one teenager be? I wanted to shake her and say honey- they were dead, you touched them and they came back to life. Oh my goodness you touch them and they died. Stop touching people and animals for crying out loud. But again that could be ignored- she is having a very rough day or two. She thinks she has a stalker- Alex because she saw him staring at her once, twice, three times.

So here’s the thing- if Alex is a stalker why would you knowingly leave with him (common sense 101 see a stalker, walk/run the other way). But if you can get pass the whole creepiness thing about him, then yeah I can see how you might begin to have feelings for him. He did help out your family in a HUGE way- it’s just well the whole hot/cold thing he had going on did not endear him to me. The issue I had with their relationship development was that it was right after her last relationship ended. For some reason that did not sit will especially since her boyfriend was kinda awesome.

Jodi did grow on me though- she has a moral compass that the others around her seem to be without. The fact that she cares about the zombies and does not want to use them was pretty cool. The fact that she ends up being the Chosen one by Medusa none the less is even cooler. The scenes with Medusa were awesome as were the scenes with Hades. The parts with Jodi’s daddy were bittersweet and kinda gross. But if I were honest, it did take most of the book for me to begin to like her.

Alex on the other hand well was creepy in the beginning, then sweet, then weird and finally a pretty good male-counterpart to Jodi. His actions in the beginning also lingered in the background for me though. They literally dumbfounded me- even after they were explained. I get why, I honestly do, but dang I am not sure I could overlook the wrecking of the room and leaving such a hairy present for me to find if I were her.

The ending was startling and left room for the series to grow. I am looking forward to the sequel, I want to see how Jodi and Hades interact with each other. I loved how she dealt with the evil within the organization in the end. I am sure that there will be consequences to her deal with Hades. I also want to see what goes on with her mom- does she ever find out?

My Rating 3 stars out of the 5 (I liked the book, but was okay with interruptions.)

Favorite Quote “Necromancers bring the dead back to life. They don’t kill the living.” I’d read enough books to know that. All the books I’d read had been fiction, but I didn’t mention that.

Other Characters

Abbey- Mean-gal Ophi
Victoria/Tony- run the Ophi school and happen to be Alex’s parents
Tony- Jodi’s English teacher and Ophi trainer
Medusa- goddess, mother of all Ophi

Swoon Thursday (2) The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden

The fabulous girls over at YA Bound created this super HOT meme. Here's how it works.

From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering.

Shout it out on Twitter with the hashtag #YABound, post it here in the comments, or grab the adorable button above and share it on your blog! I want to know & so do the gals at YABound!

His hot breath is mixed with passion and tequila and his chest crushes against mine. A gasp escapes from my lips as his searing hot palms move down my back. He thrusts his tongue deeper into my mouth and grabs at my hips, drawing me closer as the floor sways under our feet.
