Waiting on Wednesday (30) Nevernight

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

The first in a new fantasy series from the New York Times bestselling author.

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to
escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

Why I am Waiting?

An apprentice to an assassin. Revenge in her heart. This one is bound to be good.

Review: Fire Falling

Author Elise Kova
Format e-book
Print Length 378 pages
Publisher Silver Wing Press
Published Nov. 19, 2015

Soldier… Sorcerer… Savior… Who is Vhalla Yarl?

Vhalla Yarl marches to war as property of the Solaris Empire. The Emperor counts on her to bring victory, the Senate counts on her death, and the only thing Vhalla can count on is the fight of her life. As she grapples with the ghosts of her past, new challenges in the present threaten to shatter the remnants of her fragile sanity. Will she maintain her humanity? Or will she truly become the Empire’s monster?

Fire Falling is the second book in the Air Awakens Series.

My Opinion

Vhalla has been tried, convicted and sentenced. To the north she marches, along with the army. This includes the Emperor (hate him), Baldair (he is funny) and Aldrik (mister hottie/love interest). Daddy (Emperor) and baby brother both have their own agendas. Aldrik’s main concern is keeping Vhalla alive even if that means she can’t be near him. Vhalla’s main focus is well to be perfectly honest I don’t know. It should be survival, but it isn’t really. For part of the book it is as if she in shock and just going through the motions- which is completely und

Vhalla has some internal issues going on in this book. She hasn’t dealt emotionally with everything that she has been going through. Needless to say this book brings on all the feels. Yes, she does tend to get a bit whiney but after what she has been through can you blame her? She does develop a bit of a backbone especially around Elecia. It helps that her friendships with Fritz and Larel have developed as strongly as they have.

Aldrik is still the confident prince that he started out being in Air Awakens, still arrogant. We do get to see a side to him that we haven’t seen before. His protective, I have to save Vhalla even from herself side. He admits to his faults and his errors in judgement along the way. I enjoy their miscommunication almost as much as their communication. It was a delight to watch him both try to protect Vhalla and yet stay away from her at the same time.

Lots of blogger have an opinion about the surprise death, I am not one of them. I did read it as oh my goodness did that just happen, oh poor …. Oh no how will they recover..will they blame each other? The cliffhanger ending was also viewed as oh my goodness what the what? And a few seriously for good measure.

Fire Falling is a good filler book for this series. It had both character and relationship development. Actions happen that will of course be felt in the next book. I am really liking this fantasy tale and am hoping that it continues to be just as good as the first two books.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Sweet Pairings

Rebel Belle Series & Hummingbird Cake

This is the most requested cake in Southern Living History. A perfect blend of pineapples, bananas and pecans, surrounded in cream cheese frosting. It is even highlighted in book on of the Rebel Belle series, as Harper knows that the best way to apologize is to actually take the time and make this cake from scratch.

The Glittering Court Series & The Coconut Chiffon Cake

Rumor is if you can make this right, tasting fabulous and looking amazing then you have achieved royal status in your hometown. What better book to pair it with than that of Glittering Court.

Black Blade Series & Mississippi Mud Cake

The only thing richer in than the Mississippi river bank is this cake. Chocolate paired with marshmallows, and mixed with pecans is a southern delight. The river in Cloudburst Falls has great meaning for Lila which is why it is paired with this yummy dessert.

Truthwitch & Blueberry Coffee Cake

Every proper southern Sunday brunch has coffee cake involved. This one is light, sweetened with blueberries that grow everywhere in the south (people are known to pull their cars over on the side of the highway if they see a blueberry bush). It is an airy cake sprinkled with cream cheese bits inside the batter. So right away you can see why it would be paired with Truthwitch.

The Kingmaker Chronicles & Carrot Cake

Carrot cakes have been around since the medieval times. It wasn’t until it was paired with cream cheese frosting that it could be claimed as a southern cake. Many people don’t think that a cake made mostly with carrots in it would taste so good. The truth is it is simply divine, which is why it is paired with The Kingmaker Chronicles, as Greek gods are mentioned throughout.

Dragon Marked Series & Red Velvet Cake

What most people don’t know is that red velvet cake is really a chocolate cake with red food coloring. Of course depending on the recipe it may or may not have beets, buttermilk, or vinegar. It is paired with the Dragon Marked series as the main character, Jessa loves cake.

A Dark Alliance series & Lane Cake

The official cake of Alabama, Lane Cake tends to look delicate some wouldeven say sweet, yet once you take it bit you know that it packs an amazing punch. If made the proper southern way it has a lot of bourbon in it. Typically, there is a fear that the spirits aren’t all cooked away- so this is one of those cakes that get served to adults only. Due to its presentation it deceives the guest into thinking you ate getting a pretty plain white cake. It pairs nicely with Kate Serine’s newest series A Dark Alliance, the first book Deceived was released last month.

Weird Girls series & Lady Baltimore Cake

This cake is rumored to have been created in Charleston, South Caroline. It was supposed to be a knock-off of a queen’s cake from mother England. This is another cake that is mainly reserved for the grown-ups as the brandy in it does not bake out. Regardless, the nutty filling pairs perfectly with the Weird Girls series.

*All pictures but to were taking from Southern Living.  The Blueberry Coffee Cake and Lady Baltimore Cake were taking from the links attached to their names.

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Review: One Week to Score

Author Kate Meader
Format e-ARC
Print Length 195 pages
Publisher Entangled Brazen
Published July 11, 2016

A sexy category romance from Entangled's Brazen imprint . . .

He’s the man she loves to hate . . .

Olivia Kane’s wedding day has just imploded spectacularly. Shots lined up at the bar? Bring it. Hot stranger on the hook? Come on down. What this party does not need is six feet and change of home-grown Texas cockiness in the form of her brother’s best friend, the man who broke her heart seven years ago.

She’s the woman he has to have . . .

Flynn Cross won’t stand by while Liv finds sensual solace in the arms of a stranger, not when his own hard-for-her body is more than up for the task. For one week, he’ll make her honeymoon-for-one a sizzling party for two.

Breaking the rules, one steamy night at a time . . .

But the taboo they’re breaking is only the beginning . . . and Flynn’s part in Liv’s wedding debacle could bring about their end.

My Opinion

*This book is recommended for the over 18 crowd.*

Thank you to Entangled and Netgalley for allowing me to review this novel. This in no way influenced my review.

One Week to Score is a fun, fast read with a lot of steamy in between.

So what do you do when you find your future husband with another woman? On your wedding day, in your wedding dress- you go on your honeymoon alone. Unless you are Olivia Kane and your worse frienemy comes along- Flynn Cross. Flynn promises to give her all that she wants and needs instead of letting her bed be a carousal for strangers. Does it matter that he is her brothers bestie? The answer here my friend is no.

Olivia is a gal who can get knocked down, knowing she will get right back up again. She ex-fiancé, friends, family will never keep her down. Always second fiddle to her brother, a role that she doesn’t resent but accepts with a warm heart. She is smart, sexy and outgoing. She is from Texas which means she has a mouth from the south- in the right company she could curse with the best of them. Just so you know Flynn is the right company.

Flynn has issues, what guy doesn’t. A lot of the issues that have prevented them from getting together in the past are issues in his head only. He realizes on Olivia’s wedding day that he wants to step up and be with her. Which leads to an awkward situation, until his date does what she does with the person she does it with. Then one thing leads to another and he tries to protect her. Which may or may not be what she wanted. Bottomline, man has got it bad for Olivia.

One Week to Score is about a girl and a boy who stop running from their feelings and start embracing them. Olivia and Flynn should have been together regardless of the issues that prevented them from doing so years ago. Theirs is a hot story, a middle of August in Georgia without an air conditioner kinda hot. If you are looking for an emotionally funny book with a lot of adult scenes this is your book. The series itself is great, while the books are stand-alone it may be more fun to read them all at once.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

"Your armor is the same as mine," she observed, inspecting the think links curiously.

"Of course it is." He ran a hand through his hair, and Vhalla watched it cascade back into place around his fingers.

"Why?" She felt like she was missing something obvious.

"I made it." His eyes caught hers, and Vhalla couldn't find words between her surprise and the look he was giving her.

"Why?" Vhalla repeated again, remembering Larel telling her once about how Firebearers were jewelers or smiths due to their ability to manage flames.

"Why? Why do I make my own armor, my parrot?" Aldrik had to know that her inquiry was more than him making his armor. "Because I do not trust other craftsman with something as important as my life."

Waiting on Wednesday (29) Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and
John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a new play by Jack Thorne, is the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. It will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on 30th July 2016

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes darkness comes from unexpected places.

Why I am Waiting?

Review: Fairy Magic

Author Ella Summers
Format e-Book
Print Length 265 pages
Publisher Self
Published May 24, 2016

Half-fairy mercenary Naomi Garland has spent her whole life caught between two worlds. She’s learned to depend on her sword instead of her weak magic. But when a mission to save kidnapped supernaturals in Munich goes horribly wrong, she discovers an ancient fairy magic she never knew she had: the power to navigate realms.

Naomi uncovers a tear in the veil between earth and the underworld, the home realm of spirits, demons, and ghosts—and the prison of criminals banished there because they were too dangerous and demented for the earth. To stop the rising hellish army and repair the boun

daries between realms, Naomi has to journey into the underworld to find a powerful ally, a dark and tempting Dragon Born mage who has been imprisoned there for seven hundred years.

Fairy Magic is the first book in the Dragon Born Awakening urban fantasy series.

My Opinion

Someone is kidnapping hybrids and no one really cares. Noone that is but Naomi.

Naomi, a hybrid mage fairy, has been the side-kick for both Sera and Alex, so it comes as no surprise that she would get her own series. While this is a stand-alone series, it would helped with the relationships of everyone if you had read the other two series that connect to this one.

Naomi’s magic has always been weak, so she has made up for it in kick-butt fighting skills. During a night of weird happenings Naomi is attacked by a mage in a cloak. After the attack she is pulled into another realm and meets Makani an exiled prince. Once she returns to her realm she vows to help him. He in turns promises to help her- she is an extremely rare and powerful spirit warrior.

Naomi is a spirited fairy/mage, one who is confident and self-aware. She knows her strengths and caters to them. She knows her weaknesses and acknowledges them. She understands how her world works. She is relatable and loyal.

Makani is well of course hot and a dragon-born. He just seems too good to be true. He has been trapped in another realm for centuries and easily accepts modern society. Not so sure about that one. He is a gentleman, and has a moral code that he has no problem adhering to.

The banter between the Naomi and Makani is comes naturally. The interactions with Sera, Alex and the dynamic trio were almost family oriented. Overall a good spin-off. I am interested in seeing where this one goes with the big baddie being who they are.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Review: The Millionaires Gamble

Author Sarah Ballance
Format e-ARC
Print Length 161 pages
Publisher Entangled Publishing, LLC
Published July 11, 2016

Wealth has a price. Everyone wants something from you. For one woman, that something was my DNA. One minute, she was kissing me like we were going to strip it down and go
at it. And the next, she was ripping out my hair for a paternity test—and
threatening to torpedo my latest deal. I don't play these kind of games. And that damnably sexy woman with the alluring eyes and mistaken agenda is about to learn that the hard way…

Millionaire scion Jagger Hamilton didn't father Kennedy Price's nephew.
That doesn't mean he can't use the situation to his advantage. She wants
him to take a paternity test. He wants her in his bed.

He shouldn't.

She's blackmailing him, and she's playing dirty. He could try to use the
famous Hamilton charm to turn her into a powerful ally… But she makes him feel… Way. Too. Much.

Kennedy Price isn't asking much. Just for the powerful, sinfully hot, and
notorious playboy to be a decent human being. But he's used to using that
filthy, sensual mouth for getting what he wants.

And he wants her.

She’s determined not to fall for him. But there's no avoiding his charisma,
or his bed, where she threatens to lose more than the standoff between them. She just might lose her heart.

My Opinion

Thank you to Entangled and Netgalley for allowing me to review this novel. This in no way influenced my review.

The Millionaire’s Gamble is sizzling hot with tension between Jagger and Kennedy from the get go. Kennedy hates Jagger, he left her pregnant sister without a glance back. At least that is what she believes. Jagger knows it her nephew is not his. So he sets out to prove it to her.

OMG! Kennedy is amazing sauce wrapped up in a feisty no nonsense package with a side of confidence. She pretty much rocked this book. She is family orientated, intelligent, and willing to take risk. She is willing to take on Jagger and his ego any time any place. For the record his ego is not really that big, his bank account though yeah.

Jagger is a millionaire, Adonis in a suit. He is hot, smart, and rich. Females are literally throwing themselves at him. Yet, he has a conscious. He does the right thing time and time again throughout the book. His moral compass continues to surprise Kennedy.

The Millionaire’s Gamble came along at the right time. I was in a reading pit. Several of the books I have read recently felt like the same story over and over again. So when this one was on display, I thought why not. Thank goodness I did! The chemistry between these two would put a scientist teacher to blushing. The banter would have a mediator sitting back in amusement . This is one book that you don’t want to pass up.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and

rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.

Destined to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him... or that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

Review: His Fantasy Bride

Author Nina Croft
Format e-ARC
Print Length 148 pages
Publisher Entangled Publishing, LLC Brazen
Published July 11, 2016

I can’t marry you. You don’t love me.

Two sentences, that’s all Gabrielle Harper left Vito D’Ascensio when she vanished the night before their wedding. If he wants his bride back, he’s going to have to hunt her down and prove his love. But when he searches for Gabrielle, he finds Gabby instead; it seems his perfect bride is nothing but a fantasy.

After six months, Gabby presumes it’s over, an episode in her life she’s totally ashamed of. But now Vito is back. He’s the one man she can never have, but as desire explodes between them, she has a tough time remembering why they shouldn’t be together. Oh, right, her family hates him, and he’s done terrible things. Or has he? But it doesn’t matter. When he finds out the truth about who she really is…he’ll never want to see her again.

My Opinion

Thank you to Entangled and Netgalley for allowing me to review this novel. This in no way influenced my review.

Gabby left her fiancé Vitto the night before the wedding. Six months later, she thought he was over her and had moved on. Instead, he shows up at her work to watch her perform. He wants answers- a near death experience will do that to a guy. Only Gabby is afraid to tell him the answers- deleting this so as to not spoil the story for you. She just couldn’t do it, instead falling for him. Knowing that she was not who she said she was and since she wasn’t presenting the real her- he couldn’t actually love her.

Normally I am all about pretend books. Gabby is cute and riddled with guilt for what she did. Yet, she fights against coming clean about it for the sake of his feelings. She should have admitted what she did earlier on in the book. I felt that her holding it back, was a way to reflect her inner insecurity. Vitto is a stand-up guy. He deserves an amazing gal. Just not sure he got that with Gabby. The chemistry between the two of them is tea boiling hot.

Gabby’s interactions with Luca and Theresa made the book for me. Her bestie and her brother are the prefect side-kicks. Hopefully the next book is about Theresa and Dr. Hottie. Or Luca and a gal that can knock him out. The scenes with Luca and Vitto are equally entertaining.

His Fantasy Bride is the third book in a series, yet can be read as a stand-alone. I read it as a stand alone and now want to read the other two books in the series. It is a cute read that at times could cause the temperature in the room to burn.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars
